Vieira da Silva

Painted in honor of the great Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, the Portuguese artist that was born 13 June 1908 and died 1992. Some time back I visited her museum, run by her husband Arpad Szenes in Lisbon, where there was some stunning large canvases from all over the world. This image does not do her justice, but her work motivated me to try her style. I do not know what is on show at the Arpad Museum at the moment, but if you are in Lisbon it is worth the trouble to go see her work. One if the images that impressed me most was the one where two men are sitting down playing chess. The floor seems to be effected by the mental exercise of the 2 chess players, well at least that is the way that I read it.
