If (Finished at Last)

If If you can keep your head when all about your are losing theirs And blaming it on you, If you can trust yourself, when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too, If you can wait and not get tired by waiting, Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies, Or being hated, don’t give way to hating, And yet don’t look too good, not talk too wise: If you can dream – and not make dreams your master, If you can think – and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two imposter just the same; If you can to hear the truth you’ve spoken, Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you have given your life to, broken, And stoop and build ‘em up again with worn out tools: If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings, And never breath a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they have gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the will to say to them “Hold on!” If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with kings – nor lose the common touch If neither foe nor loving friend can hurt you, If all men count with you – but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute, With sixty seconds worth of distance run, Yours is the earth and everything in it, And – which is more – you’ll be a Man, my son. - Rudyard Kipling

If (Work in Progress)

This painting is now finished, but like many artists, I still want to do something more. This often destroys the painting so I will have to have a policy of "hands off". Not all that easy. The painting now has some calligraphy on the silver leaf, which is a copy of the famous poem "If" by Rudyard Kipling. It was a favorite of my fathers and has come a favorite of mine.

Vieira da Silva

Painted in honor of the great Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, the Portuguese artist that was born 13 June 1908 and died 1992. Some time back I visited her museum, run by her husband Arpad Szenes in Lisbon, where there was some stunning large canvases from all over the world. This image does not do her justice, but her work motivated me to try her style. I do not know what is on show at the Arpad Museum at the moment, but if you are in Lisbon it is worth the trouble to go see her work. One if the images that impressed me most was the one where two men are sitting down playing chess. The floor seems to be effected by the mental exercise of the 2 chess players, well at least that is the way that I read it.

Work In Progress

The underpainting has been finished, now the interesting and time consuming phase starts. This is the phase in which I loose myself and time stops, the part of making art that is so delicious.

Cogito Ergo Sum

Title: Cogito Ergo Sum. Size: 100*81cm. Medium: Silver Leaf, Winsor & Newton Oil bars and Indian Ink. Year: 2012. There are some of you out there that have studied philosophy, and will no doubt know a lot more about this title than I do. The question of existence and consciousness. One famous philosopher stated "I think, so therefore I'm"

Making old

The silver leaf has now been made to look old, now the fun bit starts with the underpainting.
